Estimating might feel intimidating but it's just Length x Width x Height and if you end up with too much you can just make it a little thicker or give some to a neighbor and if there's not quite enough you can just spread it out thinner or order up some more. No need to sweat the small stuff, you've got bigger fish to fry. Here are a few helpful hints: - Mulch: 1 cubic yard of mulch covers about 100 square feet at 3" deep. - Soil: 1 ton is approximately 1 yard but keep in mind that soil, compost and sand can all be affected by moisture content. - Not all pickup truck beds are the same size, so if you need, "about as much as would fit in a pickup" we might need to know how big the truck is and in your imaginary truck is the material mounded way up or is it level across the back. No right or wrong answers, just good to think about those things when we start talking on the phone. - Sometimes it's helpful to draw a picture of the yard with all the areas to be covered by material, measure them individually then add up the areas. - You can also call us and we'll be happy to answer questions and get you headed in the right direction if we can.
Why Mulch
As you can imagine, GreenThumb Materials is a big proponent of mulching. Why Mulch?
Here's a nice TOP-10 List: 1.) Mulching keeps the sun from shining on weeds and letting them get started. 2.) Mulching keeps valuable moisture right where the plants need it and hidden from evaporation. 3.) As mulch breaks down naturally it builds the organic matter in the soil building it up for your plants and flowers in the future. 4.) Mulching is a great way to bring a color contrast to the greenery of your yard plantings. 5.) The interface between the mulch and soil is where earth worms love to play and moving nutrients and carbon into the soil is a win-win. 6.) Weeds that do find their way into mulched beds are super easy to pull, a little tug should bring them right out compared to dry compacted soil elsewhere in the yard. 7.) It's possible to freshen up your mulch by giving it a stir, flip, and turn. The aerated mulch will look good and keep the process going. 8.) Mulch does a great job in flower beds as well as around perennials like trees and shrubs - though you won't want to pile it up against the tree trucks. Give them some space, just like we need sometimes. 9.) Mulching is a great way to involve young family members with an easy job that gives great results quickly. 10.) Mulching is a good way to use a lumber mill by-product that might otherwise be thrown out. Make each day an Earth Day at your home.
